  Achievement or academic skill assessment

Achievement or academic skill assessment focuses on child’s basic academic skills in the areas of reading, math, and writing.  Academic testing is used either alone or in conjunction with cognitive assessment to determine whether a child’s academic performance matches cognitive potential.  When working with gifted children, a discrepancy between potential and performance may indicate the presence of a learning disability, even when achievement scores are at or above the age and grade level.   Dr. Newman uses Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement – Third Edition (WJ III) and a selection of subtests from other instruments to uncover processing weaknesses and to explore them in more depth.
